The realization of online learning uses various technologies that are the availability not only for the teachers but also the students. In such condition, Indonesia responded to the opportunity and challenge of society 5.0. It is an era initiated by the Japanese government with human-centered concept and technology-based (technology-based). In this new era, the students’ proficiency is required to increase their soft skill. The enhancing of soft skill by familiarizing the students to think critical and constructive can be taken by HOTS. HOTS (The Higher Order Thinking Skills) is a complex, systematic, high-level

HOTS is a process of thinking of the students through higher cognitive levels which is developed with concept and several of learning models such as project-based learning, inquiry learning and discovery learning. Those concepts and models of learning should also be adapted to subjects or courses, such as in Japanese language learning. The qualitative research with descriptive methods was used in this research to describe the sample of Japanese language learning through HOTS conducted during covid-19 pandemics. At the University level, the courses that become the sample research are Sakubun (free writing) and Honyaku (Written Translation). The result shows that HOTS in Japanese language learning (Sakubun and Honyaku Courses) during the covid-19 pandemic could be used as an example to answer the challenges of the society 5.0.
