Analysis of the Use of Code Switching and Code Mixing in YUI’s Song Lyrics on Album From Me To You (Judging from Syntax Study)

Abstract

In the speech society, there is a bilingual term, which means that people can communicate at least using two or more languages. As a result of this bilingual condition, other events occure, namely code switching and code mixing in the use of the language used by society. Code switching and code mixing don’t only occur in communication activities, but can occur in the form of a work of art or literature, whether oral or written, one of which is a song. This research aims to determine the use and structure of sentence formation that includes code switching and code mixing, types of code switching and code mixing, and the causes of code switching and code mixing in YUI’s song lyrics on the album From Me To You. Using theory from Suandi and Suwito’theory. The method in this research uses the descriptive method with Agih techniques. The data used is the YUI’s song on the album From Me To You as many as 56 data, consisting of 16 code switching data and 40 code mixing data. The results of the research state that the use and structure of sentences containing code switching and code mixing in the YUI’s song lyrics on the album From Me To You are in the form of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences. There are only external types of code switching, but in code mixing there are types of outer code mixing and hybrid code mixing. The occurrence of code switching is caused by speakers, setting and scene, while the occurrence of code mixing is caused by speakers, code limitations, and the use of popular terms.
