‘II’ AND ‘BAIK’ AS POLYSEMY: COGNITIVE LINGUISTIC STUDY

Abstract

This research is based on the student difficulty in using words that have many related meanings. The words that have multiple meaning is called polysemi. There are basic meaning and the extension of meaning in polysemy. The aim of this research is to find out the relationship between basic meaning and the extension of meaning. The object of this research is the word “ii” in Japanese and “baik” in bahasa. The method used is descriptive method. Three figurative languages that used to correlate beetwen basic meaning and the extension of meaning are metaphors, metonyms, and synecdoche. Data source used from printed media published by Japanese and Indonesian. The results of this research found that the basic meaning of the word “ii” is something isn’t bad. There are 14 extension of the meaning word “ii”, high quality, beautiful, attractive, proficient, according to standards, friendly, harmonious, beneficial, pleasant, jealous, unnecessary, sufficient, permission and advice. In the other hand, the basic meaning of word “baik” in Indonesian is beautiful. There are four extension of the meanings word “baik”, fortunate, benficial, positive, and safe. In the word “ii”, there are 6 metaphore relations and 8 metonyms relations between basic meaning and the extension of meaning. In the word “baik”, there are 2 metonyms relations, 1 metaphore relation and 1 synecdoche realtion between basic meaning and the extension of meaning.
