Understanding Japanese Non Verbal Communication Through the Reality Show Ningen Kansatsu Variety Monitoring

A communication model by Albert Mehrabian demonstrated that 7% of what being communicate consist of the literal content of the message. 38% of one’s voice and 55% of body language. This show that 93% of communication consist of nonverbal component. Extensive previous research on Japanese indicates how Japanese culture plays an important role in shaping nonverbal communication activities. Japanese nonverbal codes can be classified under nine specific groupings which on of it is kinesics. This study intended to analyze what kind of kinesics being use by Japanese and also the meaning of it through the reality show "Ningen Kansatsu Variety Monitoring”. This study used descriptive qualitative method to find the answer. The data from the reality show "Ningen Kansatsu Variety Monitoring” is described in the form of images and words. Data showed that Rising eye brow indicate questions, surprise. Eye widening indicate surprised. Eye pointing indicate pointing. Eye lowering indicate feeling sorry or one type of “bowing”. Looking and glancing indicate asking for opinion. Vertical nods indicate agreement, attentiveness, minimal form of bowing. Horizontal nods indicate disagreement. Vertical jerks indicate acknowledgment, paying attention, end of statement or question. Head tilting to the side indicate cogitation. Finger and palm pointing indicate pointing at me, you, things, or place. Hand waving indicate greeting, disagreement. Applause indicate admiring, adoring, complimenting, celebrating.
